Arlene and Larry Dunn, both music aficionados, had always been fans of two ensembles at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music. So, the Dunns put the retirement community Kendal at Oberlin on the top of their list after they began looking for a new home. In addition to having a rich cultural life, the Dunns could audit Oberlin’s classes free and attend lectures. Last year, the Dunns sold their home in rural LaCrosse, Ind., and moved to the college community in neighboring Ohio.

“We love being around young people,” said Ms. Dunn, who is 71. “And Oberlin is a very active community.”
