Cohort Information
The ADVANCE study (Atherosclerotic Disease, VAscular FuNction, & GenetiC Epidemiology) was approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at both Stanford University and the Kaiser Permanente of Northern California (KPNC) Division of Research. The source population included adults (age ≥18 years) receiving medical care within KPNC, a population generally representative of the local and statewide insured adult population.
Between October 28, 2001 and December 31, 2003, we recruited a total of 3179 subjects into 5 cohorts (see below for details):
- a cohort of subjects presenting with clinically significant CAD at a young age (< 45 years for males, < 55 years for females),
- a cohort of subjects presenting with incident stable angina at an older age,
- a cohort of subjects presenting with incident acute myocardial infarction (AMI) at an older age,
- a cohort of young subjects with no history of CAD, and
- a cohort of subjects aged 60 to 72 with no history of CAD, CVA, or PAD.
Eligible subjects were identified using the KPNC electronic databases and those who agreed to participate were interviewed and examined at one of several clinics in the San Francisco Bay Area. A sixth cohort of 479 young subjects with no history of CAD was formed by collaborating with investigators from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study 3.
The design of the ADVANCE study allowed for three main case control comparisons:
- young cases (Cohort 1) compared with young controls (Cohorts 4, 5)
- older cases presenting with incident AMI (Cohort 3) compared with older cases presenting with incident stable exertional angina (Cohort 2)
- older cases (Cohorts 2,3) compared with older controls (Cohort 6)
