INDE 231A is an 8 week course centered around a series of panels, workshops, exercises, and discussions to provide practical, hands-on preparation for Bioscience PhD students, postdoctoral fellows and research/clinical trainees ready to apply to academic positions. It not only previews the academic hiring process, including tips from experienced faculty from different types of institutions, but also guides participants in the preparation and polishing of their application materials for success on the job market.
Trainees may attend the class formally by auditing or registering or by a drop-in basis. However, the final course session will be limited solely to those who register or audit. Links to individual registrations
Course Objectives: By the end of this course, participants will:
- Have a deeper understanding of the academic hiring process, including insider tips and how hiring committees select candidates.
- Develop polished CVs, cover letters, research statements, and teaching statements that convey their fit to their academic career of choice, and receive individual feedback to improve their materials and candidacy.
- Have a cohort of peers and faculty mentors to assist and support one another during the academic hiring process and beyond.
Target Audience: Open to all aspiring academics in the Biosciences.
Networking Receptions
Informal networking receptions with local area faculty and alumni will follow the opening panel and the final review session.
Registration/Attendance is open to all biomedical/biosciences PhD/MD students and postdocs.
- Due to the cohort nature of the class, size is limited to 30 trainees.
- PhD/MD students may register via AXESS.
- Postdocs and TGR students may audit by providing a $125 check at the first class to reserve your spot; checks will be torn up at the end, if trainees attend 6 or more sessions.
- Drop-in registration links are available on the syllabus below.
These programs replace INDE 231: Future Faculty Seminar, which is no longer offered. Past syllabi, speaker lists and videos of the Future Faculty Seminar are available here.
