***Limited $300,000 funding opportunity for a team of Stanford faculty with PI eligibility (with UTL, MCL, and NTL-Research appointments). The required research topic is Quantitative Assessment Tools for Detection and Measurement of Neurodegenerative Disease Progression and Cognitive Decline. Only two applications are permitted a university-wide internal selection process is required.

The Archer Award will support the development of innovative technologies and tools that could be used to diagnose and monitor progression in neurodegenerative disease. Our goal is to support investigators in finding potential new diagnostic, rather than predictive, biomarkers or to further develop the accuracy and/or utility of current biomarkers or novel combinations thereof. The Foundation encourages submissions from young scientists working to advance these goals.


Clarification from the sponsor:
The primary intent of the Archer Award is not to fund basic research on the brain, nor to fund potential therapies for neurodegenerative disorders, but rather to promote the development of potentially commercial markers of neurodegenerative disease progression in humans".

Internal Stanford Neurosciences Institute (SNI) deadline: May 21, 2018, 12 noon (see internal submission guidelines below)
The two applicants selected by SNI will be notified: May 25, 2018
Sponsor's Letter of intent (LOI) (for 2 applicants selected): May 31, 2018
If one of the two PI's is invited to submit a full proposal, he/she will need to alert his/her RPM asap:

Full proposal (by invitation only) deadline: September 15, 2018


Amount of funding: $100,000 per year x 3 years (allows for 10% of the award to be used for indirect costs)

Purpose:
The Archer Foundation established the Archer Award to foster innovative research that will expand the frontiers of human knowledge in the field of neuroscience. The Archer Award is currently focused on helping scientists develop technologies for early detection and measurement of neurodegenerative disease progression in order to advance the development of treatment methods.

The Archer Award is by invitation only and is awarded to a scientific team that has demonstrated superior quality of scientific research in the field of neuroscience.  We strongly encourage applications from early- and mid-career investigators who may have new ideas that need a limited period of funding to obtain data for application to the NIH or other major funding source. A Scientific Advisory Panel assists the Board of the Archer Foundation in the identification of applicant candidates and the selection of the recipients.

Focus of the Award
Future progress in developing therapies for neurodegenerative diseases will depend on technologies for early detection and measurement of disease progression in humans. The Archer Award is intended to foster research at the interface of basic science and technology development and to advance the development and application of innovative diagnostic methods in neurodegenerative disease(s).

The Foundation seeks original, creative approaches and new technologies to address the problem of developing methods for detection, early diagnosis andmeasurement of neurodegenerative disease progression, a problem that we see as crucial to clinical development of therapies.

Clarification from the sponsor:

Applicants are asked to describe the specific problem being addressed,  the focus of their proposed research, and what is novel about it.  They are asked to describe preliminary findings that encourage the pursuit of the proposed approach and expected milestones. Applicants must also describe the validation techniques/ experiments they will employ to address the risks and challenges of the approach. Required attachments include appropriately annotated figures, a list of references and hyperlinks that support the work proposed, and  a biographical sketch for each of the involved scientific investigators.

 

Recipients
Award Recipients are required to submit an online annual report to the Foundation summarizing the interim and final results of the research and a copy of any published or proposed paper. Recipients may also be required to travel to Las Vegas, NV (travel expenses will be covered) to present results.

Selection process:
Your proposals will be reviewed by a Stanford Neurosciences Institute internal review committee. That committee will select the two applicants to represent the university who will submit their Letters of Intent (LOI) by the sponsor’s May 31, 2018 deadline.
