ScoringThe score for each item is the number circled. If two consecutive numbers are circled, code the lower number (less self-efficacy). If the numbers are not consecutive, do not score the item. The score for the scale is the mean of the eight items. If more than two items are missing, do not score the scale. Higher number indicates higher self-efficacy. CharacteristicsTested on 189 Spanish-speaking subjects with type 2 diabetes.
Source of Psychometric DataSpanish Diabetes Self-Management (Programa de Manejo Personal de la Diabetes) Study. Study reported in Lorig KR, Ritter PL, Gonzalez VM. Hispanic chronic disease self-management: a randomized community-based outcome trial. Nurs Res. 2003; Nov-Dec;52(6):361-9. CommentsThis 8-item scale was developed and tested in Spanish for the Diabetes Self-Management study, and has been translated into English. There is another way that we use to format these items, which takes up less space on a questionnaire, shown in the PDF version (see link at the bottom of this page).
