STANFORD, Calif. – A balanced team effort and several nationally-ranked swims led Stanford 164-136 past NC State Saturday afternoon at Avery Aquatic Center.

“Today was the first time in my three plus years here that I saw a truly complete team effort. Even with the ups and downs throughout the meet, the team stayed in it and knew that if we stayed focused and stepped up that we could win,” said Goldman Family Director of Men’s Swimming Ted Knapp. “We knew some events favored NC State and some favored us, but I think we surprised them. It was really our depth on the team that won the meet for us today.”

While the Cardinal started off slow, it surged by the fifth event where Matt Anderson (54.92) and Christian Brown (55.11) took first and second in the 100-yard breaststroke to get Stanford started.

The Cardinal also swept up the 200-yard butterfly with Gray Umbach (1:44.63), Jimmy Yoder (1:45.55) and Abrahm DeVine (1:46.84) taking home first through third place.

Umbach (1:45.93) added an impressive win in the 200 IM to give him two swims ranked nationally in the top four on the season.

Stanford also took first place in the 200-yard backstroke from Patrick Conaton (1:44.35) and the 200-yard breaststroke from Matt Anderson (1:59.21) before Andrew Liang’s phenomenal win in the 100-yard butterfly, besting NC State’s Soeren Dahl 47.30 to 47.60.

On the diving side of the competition, Stanford dominated the 3-meter as Ted Miclau (371.55), Connor Kuremsky (361.20) and Tarek Abdelghany (357.23) swept the top marks for the Cardinal.

The Cardinal returns to action at the A3 Performance Invite in Monterey Park, California, beginning Thursday, Nov. 19.
