STANFORD, Calif. - No. 8 Stanford opens spring competition this weekend at a pair of tournaments, with a split squad participating at the NCTC Classic in Indian Wells, Calif., and the Freeman Memorial Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev.
Taylor Davidson, Caroline Doyle, Lindsey Kostas and Naomie Rosenberg will be competing at the NCTC Classic. In 2015, Davidson teamed up with Carol Zhao to claim the event’s doubles crown.
Krista Hardebeck, Caroline Lampl, Melissa Lord, Paulette Wolak, Elizabeth Yao and Kimberly Yee are headed to the Freeman Memorial Invitational. The Cardinal will be seeking its third straight doubles title at the event, as Doyle and Ellen Tsay achieved the feat last season.
Stanford boasts two nationally-ranked singles players in Davidson (20) and Doyle (39). Davidson led the Cardinal with eight victories in the fall, including her first career singles title at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships. Rosenberg is right behind at 7-3 overall while Doyle and Lord have notched five wins apiece.
In doubles, Davidson and Doyle own a No. 10 ranking. The junior tandem enters the spring at 9-1 overall, having won the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships and the consolation title at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships.
The most storied program in women's college tennis, Stanford (18-6, 7-3 Pac-12) reached the NCAA quarterfinals for the sixth consecutive season in 2014-15. Seeded No. 14 in the NCAA Championships draw, Stanford upset No. 3 California in the round of 16 and despite falling 4-1 to No. 6 Georgia in the quarterfinals, Stanford has now won 10 of its last 12 NCAA duals when seeded lower than its opponent. The Cardinal has entered NCAA’s seeded higher than fifth only once (No. 1 in 2011) over the last seven years. But Stanford won the 2010 NCAA championship as the No. 8 seed and two years ago became the lowest-seeded team at No. 12 to win an NCAA title. The Cardinal, which placed fourth in the Pac-12 and was ranked between No. 7-14 in the country throughout the season, was seeking its third straight semifinal appearance.
