William C. Ostendorff

Biography: 

The Honorable William C. Ostendorff is serving his second term as a Commissioner of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Previously, Ostendorff served as Principal Deputy Administrator at the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration and was a staff member of the House Armed Services Committee. Ostendorff holds a bachelor’s degree in systems engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy, law degrees from the University of Texas and Georgetown University, and was an officer in the U.S. Navy for 25 years, retiring as Captain.

The responsibility to review and license SMRs falls to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which has been closely watching small modular reactor developments and is currently conducting detailed pre-application reviews.
