Gavin Sherlock, PhD
Associate Professor of Genetics
Gavin has been a Stanford faculty member since 2003. He did his undergraduate degree in Genetics, and his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, both at the University of Manchester in the U.K. He then moved to the US, where he first was a postdoctoral fellow at Cold Spring Harbor, investigating transcription during the cell cycle, and he was then a postdoc with David Botstein at Stanford, where he learned Bioinformatics. He worked as a software engineer for the Saccharomyces Genome Database, and then directed the Stanford Microarray Database, before starting his own lab. He is an award-winning teacher and mentor, and co-directs the Stanford Teaching and Mentoring Academy. Outside the lab, he enjoys spending time watching his beloved Manchester United, refereeing AYSO soccer games, DJing at the Department Retreat, and traveling.
As a research mentor, Gavin seeks to counsel students on how to seize opportunities, see the big picture, and chart their course as they navigate their time in graduate school. In addition to mentoring his own students, Gavin has served on the thesis advisory/reading committees for students in Genetics, Biology, Cancer Biology, Biochemistry, Developmental Biology and Microbiology and Immunology.
As a SoLID faculty mentor, Gavin is prepared to share his experiences on what it was like to be a first-generation college student, the mistakes he has made along the way, and be there to listen to students talk about their challenges and experiences.
