RCR: NSF Requirement

Intended audience
PI and research team

The National Science Foundation requires that, at the time of proposal submission, the institution has a plan to provide appropriate Responsible Conduct of Research training and oversight to all students (undergraduates, graduate, and postdocs) who will be supported by NSF to conduct research.  Students who are funded by the National Science Foundation, e.g., students with NSF fellowships, or paid as an RA on an NSF research project, are required to complete the appropriate RCR module within the first quarter of their funding.

Completion of one of the courses listed below satisfies the NSF requirement for training in the responsible conduct of research.

  1. CITI Modules on Responsible Conduct of Research. These web-based modules have been developed by the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI).
  2. MED 255: Responsible Conduct of Research. This one-quarter Stanford course is offered through the Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics.
