Yet another postcall morning, which has a way of making the hospital seem louder than ever—telemetry monitors chirp like small, cold-blooded vertebrates in digital trees; a nurse stops you with a hushed but urgent update; then a startling vibration, a buzzing on your person—is it your phone, your pager, or your fitness tracker notifying you that you have already met your step goals for the day? You have 4 new admissions you must see, one of which requires a code discussion. Two patients are ready to be discharged before noon, but as the hospitalist attending of record, you must first evaluate them. A case manager waves brightly to remind you that all patients need to be discussed before the team splinters for interdisciplinary rounds and morning report. Later, you are teaching vital signs to the first-year medical students, deciding whether to tell them about the dream you had last night about the cuff morphing into a Chinese finger trap, making it look as if you had never taken a blood pressure before.
