Personal bio
Estelle Freedman earned her B.A. at Barnard College and her Ph.D. in U.S. history at Columbia University. She has been teaching at Stanford since 1976 and specializes in women's history, the history of sexuality, and interdisciplinary feminist studies. A recipient of the Deans Award, the Dinkelspiel Award, and the Rhodes Prize for undergraduate teaching, she has also won two awards for graduate mentoring. Her books include No Turning Back: The History of Feminism and the Future of Women (2002) and Intimate Matters: A History of Sexuality in America (1988; rev.1997). In addition to swimming she enjoys participating in the San Francisco Folk Music Club.
