Founder and Artistic Director of Stanford Summer Theater (SST), Rush teaches courses at Stanford on drama, film, opera, acting, directing, and contemporary political resistance. For SST, Rush directed Dylan Thomasâ?? Under Milk Wood (2011), The Wanderings of Odysseus (2010), Sophoclesâ?? Electra (2009), Brian Frielâ??s Faith Healer (2008), and Aristophanesâ?? Lysistrata (adapted by Amy Freed, 2003). He has acted in Uncle Vanya (Astrov), The Lesson (Lecturer), Waiting for Godot (Pozzo), Biedermann and the Firebugs (Biedermann), The Lover (Man/Max), Les Blancs (Charles Morris), and Old Times (Deeley). In an earlier life Rush worked as an actor or director at various regional theaters, including the Magic Theater and TheatreWorks (Bay Area), Alliance Theater and Seven Stages (Atlanta), Guthrie Theater (Minneapolis), Center Theater Group (Los Angeles), and Arena Stage (Washington, D.C.) Professor of Drama and Classics at Stanford, Rush the author of several books on Greek tragedy, including including Greek Tragic Theatre, Marriage to Death: The Conflation of Wedding and Funeral Rituals in Greek Tragedy, The Play of Space: Spatial Transformation in Greek Tragedy, and Radical Theatre: Greek Tragedy and the Modern World.
