Davis, Calif. – A second-half goal by Fran Tew and a balanced team effort were enough for No. 10 Stanford to defeat UC Davis 2-1 on Friday afternoon at the Aggie Field Hockey Facility.
The Cardinal (8-3, 1-1 America East) held advantages over the Aggies (6-8, 0-2 America East) in shots (8-5) and penalty corners (5-2) en route to its first conference victory of the season.
Jessica Chisholm opened the scoring early, netting on Stanford's first penalty corner of the game in the second minute. Sarah Helgeson inserted a pass to Maddie Secco, who set up Chisholm's fifth of the season. Tew doubled the Cardinal's lead shortly after halftime in the 39th minute with help from Secco, who picked up her team-leading seventh assist of the year.
UC Davis cut the lead in half in the 46th minute, but Dulcie Davies and the Cardinal defense were ultimately able to deny an equalizer. Davies made two saves and improved to 8-3 on the year. Emma Christus led the Cardinal in shots with three and Caroline Beaudoin had two.
Stanford will be back in action next week when it travels to Evanston, Illinois, to take on No. 14 Northwestern on Friday and No. 16 Michigan on Sunday.
