New
Best Practice Alert (BPA) to Increase Appropriate Plasma/FFP Transfusion (PDF)
Soon, a new best practice alert (BPA) will appear
in Epic if plasma/FFP is ordered with a recent INR <=1.7.
Transfusion of plasma is neither necessary nor effective for reducing
minimally elevated INR prior to procedure or as a prophylaxis against
bleeding. This is an important, multi-departmental initiative to
increase adherence to evidence based medicine and reduce unnecessary
side effects and surgical delays.
What's
New and Coming Soon in Epic
Starting 9/11: Health maintenance alerts suppressed
for terminally ill patients.
Starting 10/6: The Drug
Enforcement Agency (DEA) has changed hydrocodone
combination products (HCPs) from Schedule III to the
more-restrictive Schedule II. This change goes into effect on
10/6/14. More information to come later this month.
California
Initiative to Require Drug and Alcohol Testing of Doctors (PDF)
California's Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act
("MICRA"), enacted in 1975, is under threat with the
introduction of California Ballot Initiative to Require Drug and
Alcohol Testing of Doctors and would increase California's cap on
non-economic damages that can be assessed in medical negligence
lawsuits from $250,000 to $1.1 million.
