Leadership Dinners bring proven leaders from various arenas together with a small group of graduate students for dinner and informal discussion about what it means to be a leader and to lead organizations, movements, and people.
Shane Kim, Board of Directors of GameStop
After nearly twenty years with Microsoft, Shane Kim retired from the company in January, 2010 to spend more time with his family as well as other personal and professional interests.
Kim spent fifteen years of his career at Microsoft with its Interactive Entertainment Business (IEB). At the end of his career, he was corporate vice president of Strategy and Business Development, responsible for driving strategic planning for IEB. Previously, as the corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios, Kim oversaw a team of approximately 1,000 programmers, designers, artists and producers developing a broad range of Xbox 360 and Windows titles.
In this role, Kim led the delivery of many of the industry’s biggest Xbox 360 and Windows games franchises, including “Halo,” “Age of Empires,” “Fable,” “Flight Simulator,” “Gears of War,” “Project Gotham Racing,” “Forza Motorsport” and “Zoo Tycoon.” Under his leadership, Metacritic data shows that Microsoft Game Studios led all game publishers in overall portfolio quality from 2005 to 2008.
Since retiring in 2010, Kim has been advising multiple companies in the interactive entertainment and digital media industries. In July 2011, he joined the board of directors of GameStop, a $9 billion global multichannel videogame, consumer electronics, and wireless services retailer. Shane also serves on the boards of the Stanford Alumni Association and nonprofit Positive Coaching Alliance.
Kim holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and international relations from Stanford University, where he also played intercollegiate volleyball, and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
