Pottery Creek by Judith Content

Palo Alto artist Judith Content is best known for her textile artworks, which have been exhibited throughout the United States, in Europe, and Asia. But Judith got her start as a ceramic artist. Pottery Creek honors her background in ceramic arts as well as the important role of ceramics in the history and future of the Palo Alto Art Center.

Pottery Creek was born thanks to community-wide contributions of cracked plates, chipped mugs, broken dishes, unused ceramics tiles, and other imperfect or broken artisan ceramics. For the past nine months, Judith smashed the ceramics into smaller pieces, then used two electric tumblers to make the shards smooth. The resulting installation is intended to reflect the form and shape of a pebble-lined creek bed.

Featuring a diverse range of colors, textures, and shapes, Pottery Creek provides a welcoming entrance for all, celebrating the Art Center’s commitment to fostering imagination and creativity. Judith thanks the many community members who contributed pottery to the project as well as those who offered support and counsel. The Palo Alto Art Center thanks Judith for her inspired contribution to our transformed facility.
