The Quarterly Coal Distribution Report (QCDR) provides detailed U.S. domestic coal distribution data by coal origin state, coal destination state, mode of transportation, and consuming sector. Quarterly data for all years are preliminary and will be superseded by the release of the corresponding “Annual Coal Distribution Report.”

Highlights for the second quarter 2017:

• Total domestic coal distribution was an estimated 157.5 million short tons (MMst) in the second quarter 2017. This value is 8.8 MMst (i.e. 5.3%) lower than the previous quarter and 13.4 MMst (i.e. 9.3%) higher than the second quarter of 2016 estimates.
• Wyoming was the leading origin state of coal, accounting for about 71.0 MMst of shipments delivered to 30 states. Texas was the leading destination state, receiving about 21.5 MMst of domestic coal.
• Total shipments moved via railroads, river, and truck accounted for an estimated 68.3%, 12.8%, and 9.9% of the coal, respectively. Tramway and conveyor deliveries, which are traditionally associated with mine mouth power plants, accounted for about 9.0% of coal shipments.
• Electric utilities and independent power producers received approximately 91.9% of the total distribution.
