For example, the second quarter is the prompt quarter of a period from January to the end of March. In the row headings, the Btu values represent heat content per pound of coal, and the SO2 values reflect their percentage of total coal weight. About the NYMEX
The New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) offers coal futures and options contracts. For the NYMEX futures market, coal contracts specify delivery by seller to the buyer. The actual origins of the coal are not defined, but the coal must meet a set of specifications as to heat, ash, moisture, sulfur, volatile matter, hardness or grind ability, and sizing and must be delivered in a specified quantity of tons. NYMEX contract specifications can be found at: www.cmegroup.com.
