Joint phenotype in the absence of von Hippel Lindau (Vhl), hypoxia-inducible factor (Hif)-1α (Hif-1α), or HIF-2α (Epas1) in limb bud mesenchyme. Fibrosis is ameliorated in the joints of mutant mice that lack both Vhl and Epas1. Synovial fibrosis, fusion of small cartilaginous elements, presence of ectopic cartilage, and menisci could not be evaluated in double and triple mutant mice that lack both Vhl and Hif-1α or Vhl and Hif-1α and Epas1, respectively, because of the severe deformities of the mutant bones and the partial fusion of the epiphyses.
