San Jose Barracuda goaltender Josef Korenar is highlighted in the latest Prospect Spotlight

  • 00:59 •

It's not every day that an American Hockey League team has an opportunity to develop a talented goaltender. The San Jose Barracuda are not just witnessing the growth and development of one, but two elite goaltenders at the same time. Antoine Bibeau was the first to arrive after being signed by the Sharks as a free agent on July 1 and two weeks later, Josef Korenar joined the Sharks organization who formed a sharp, gifted tandem for the Barracuda this year.

In his 27 appearances this season with the 'Cuda, Korenar has been exceeding expectations. He currently sits seventh in the league in goals-against average (2.43) and is tied for 11th in save percentage (.914). His 19 wins are tied for eighth in the AHL (19-6-1) and he sits tied for third in shutouts (3). To top off his strong rookie season, Korenar was one of three Barracuda players to represent San Jose at the AHL All-Star Classic in January 2019.

25 Years of SAP Center: The Shark Head

by Mark Purdy @MercPurdy / sjsharks.com

No one seems to recall exactly who had the duty of informing the Shark players. The consensus is that it was Kevin Constantine.

Twenty five years ago, Constantine was the Sharks' new head coach for their very first home game in the building then known as San Jose Arena. This meant that, as his team prepared to take the ice just before the historic first faceoff, Constantine had to tell them this:

"Uh, guys, there's something you should know. When we walk out to the tunnel, there's going to be this enormous Shark head with an open mouth. And the mouth will be filled with fog. And we'll skate through the mouth onto the ice. So whatever you do, don't get lost in the fog, turn too quick and trip over one of the giant teeth."

Rob Zettler, who was on the Sharks' roster that night, also has no memory of the players' response to this stunning information. The date was October 14, 1993. At that point, no team in National Hockey League history had ever skated onto the ice through anything, let alone a giant fabricated fish mouth.

Matt Levine, the Sharks' marketing guru who dreamed up the Shark head entrance along with his partner Bob Brand, knew that it was something wildly different for the sport and that the reception in the dressing room might be iffy.

"It is my understanding," Levine says today, "that a couple of older players were skeptically conservative about it. But most of them voiced a 'Why not?' attitude."

Constantine, however, was on board totally.

"I know Kevin was supportive of the dramatic impact he knew it would have, energizing the players and fans," Levine says.

Never has there been a more accurate scouting report.

Gameday Blog: Sharks vs. Blackhawks 3/3

Your source for news for San Jose Sharks gameday

by Ann Frazier / sjsharks.com

Welcome to the Gameday Blog, which will be updated throughout the day with news, lineup information, videos, and tweets.

Tonight the San Jose Sharks continue their busy March at SAP Center, hosting the Chicago Blackhawks at 7PM.

On Friday, the previous Sharks game, the Sharks beat the Colorado Avalanche 4-3. Marcus Sorensen recorded his first two-goal game of his career, while Joe Pavelski scored his team-leading 36th goal of the season. On the other hand, the Blackhawks are coming off a 6-3 loss to the Los Angeles Kings.

The previous time these two teams met on December 16, the Blackhawks went out to an early 2-0 lead before the Sharks scored 7 of the next 8 goals. Brent Burns, Evander Kane, Logan Couture, Tomas Hertl, and Melker Karlsson all recorded multi-point games. The Sharks are 25-8-3 against the Western Conference this season, and 12-2-3 at home.

The Sharks hope to take advantage of the Blackhawks being a tired team on the second half of back-to-backs and get closer to the Pacific- and West-leading Calgary Flames. Meanwhile, the Blackhawks are still holding on to tenuous playoff hopes, to a point where every game is a must-win.

Sharks fans can tune into tonight's game on NBCSCA. In addition, Sharks fans can listen on 98.5 KFOX or the Sharks radio network, or tune in on the Sharks + SAP Center app.
