Spay/Neuter Program for Cats & Dogs

Santa Clara County continues to recognize the long-term benefits achieved by providing a widely available, low cost spay/neuter program for Santa Clara County residents.  Toward the objective of improving health and quality of life for the citizens of Santa Clara County and the animals they care about, the Low Cost Spay/Neuter Program for cats and dogs summarized below is available to all residents of Santa Clara County.

Participating Cities

While the program continues to be available to any resident of Santa Clara County, the following cities have chosen to contribute funding to the County Low Cost Spay/Neuter Program.  Residents of these cities and residents of the unincorporated portion of Santa Clara County will enjoy a lower co-payment for services provided to a healthy feral/stray cat.  Participating cities include:

Gilroy

Mountain View

Sunnyvale

Feral/Stray Cat Spay/Neuter Program

In order to expand the capacity of the Santa Clara County Low Cost Spay/Neuter Program, the County has encouraged cities within the County to contribute funding to this program in an amount equal to the utilization of the program by its residents (e.g. the city in which the resident lives should contribute funds in an amount equal to the County’s cost for each spay or neuter surgery paid for by the County Program).  For example, when a resident in a participating city utilizes the program to obtain a feral/stray cat spay or neuter, the cost to the resident is $10.  The participating city would then contribute an amount to the County equal to the County’s cost.

Residents of the unincorporated areas of Santa Clara County will continue to pay a $10 co-payment for a stray/feral cat spay/neuter surgery.

Residents of non-participating cities will continue to have access to feral/stray cat spay/neuter services from the same veterinary clinics.  These residents will pay a larger portion of the surgery cost than the residents of participating cities and residents of the unincorporated portions of the County.  Most non-participating cities have identified an alternative source for lower cost spay/neuter services within their own city or from the animal care and services organization that provides animal sheltering and field services in their community.  Residents of non-participating cities will pay a $25 co-payment for a feral/stray cat surgery.

In addition to spay/neuter services, cats receive rabies and distemper vaccinations.  Also, in order to provide a method for tracking whether or not a feral/stray cat is sterile, each feral/stray cat receiving treatment in the program has one ear notched in a manner conspicuous enough to make its identification as a sterile animal somewhat easier. The practice of ear-notching is a generally accepted part of a humane “Trap-Neuter-Release” or “TNR” program for feral cats.  Appointments are always required, so please contact the participating veterinary clinic for more information.

Spay/Neuter Program for Domestic Cats

Under the domestic cat program, the County has increased the payment to the participating veterinary clinic to $30 for each healthy cat, with the cat’s owner/guardian paying the balance of the surgery cost.  In addition to spay/neuter services, cats receive rabies and distemper vaccinations.  Appointments are always required, so please contact the clinic for more information.

Spay/Neuter Program for Dogs

Under the low cost spay/neuter program for dogs, the County has increased the payment to the participating veterinary clinic to $60 for each healthy dog with the dog’s owner/guardian paying the balance of the surgery cost.  In addition to spay/neuter services, dogs receive rabies vaccinations.  Appointments are always required, so please contact the clinic for more information.

New, Limited “FREE” Spay/Neuter Program for Pit Bull Type & Large Breed Type Dogs

The County has set aside $10,000 of the annual Low Cost Spay/Neuter Program funding in order to offer a “free” pit bull type and large dog breed spay/neuter program.  The program is limited to $10,000, so when the cost of services provided reaches that amount, the program will be terminated.  Residents that wish to take advantage of this offering must always make an appointment in advance in order to be sure the program is still available.

Pit Bull type dogs and large breed type dogs are identified by the participating veterinary clinic.  The County bears the entire cost of surgery provided to any female large breed dog when as an adult is 45lbs or over up to 6 months of age or female pit bull type dog up to 6 months of age, or any male large breed dog when as an adult is 45lbs or over of any age or male pit bull type dog of any age.  The County will pay up to $100 of the cost for surgery for a female large breed dog 6 months of age and older and when as an adult is 45lbs or over or pit bull type dog 6 months of age and older, with the owner/guardian responsible for the balance of the cost.

In all cases, health issues or conditions may affect the surgery price.  For example, a pregnant animal or one in heat will result in additional fees.  Other health conditions may also affect the treatment provided and the cost incurred.  Please consult the providing veterinary clinic for details specific to your animal.

Participating Veterinary Clinics and Proof of Residence

The veterinary clinics listed below participate in the Santa Clara County Low Cost Spay/Neuter Program, however, not all offer services for feral/stray cats, even those in traps or cages.  Please verify availability of services for feral/stray cats in advance with the clinic you plan to use.  Domestic cats should always be brought to the clinic in a carrier.  All dogs must be on a leash.  Always call in advance for an appointment!

You will be asked to provide proof of home residency in the County before services are provided.  A photo identification that includes your home address is sufficient.
