THANK YOU for your interest in becoming a volunteer at
the County of Santa Clara Animal Shelter.

Volunteers are the backbone of our adoption program, providing essential services to the animals in our care. Please review the following volunteer job opportunities before coming down to the shelter to fill out an application.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and must attend a
volunteer orientation. Questions: Call Volunteer Coordinator, Jeri Seiden at (408) 686-3909.

Volunteer Opportunities

Dog Socializers: Dog socializers provide much-needed attention and exercise for the adoptable dogs. Dog socializers will take dogs out to the yard for playtime, brushing, and training. Advanced dog socializers will show dogs to potential adopters and take dogs for hikes offsite. Socializers must commit to one day a week for three hours.

Cat Socializers: Cat socializers provide much-needed attention and exercise for the adoptable cats. Cat socializers will let cats out of the cage in the adoption room for playtime and brushing.  Advanced cat socializers will show cats to potential adopters.  Socializers must commit to one day a week for three hours.

Foster Parents: Foster parents provide care in their homes for animals that are too young, too shy, or too ill to go up for adoption.  During the spring and summer, the shelter takes in hundreds of young kittens who need to be fostered until they are at least eight weeks old. Throughout the year, the shelter takes in many dogs with nursing puppies, elder/ill dogs and cats, and undersocialized dogs and cats that will not do well at the shelter. A few weeks or months in a foster home means the difference between life and death.
