The Smuggler Mountain site is located in Aspen, Colorado. Lead and silver mining took place at Smuggler Mountain from 1879 to 1920. Mining activities and wastes, including toxic metals, mill tailings and smelter byproducts, contaminated soil and groundwater with heavy metals. Following cleanup, EPA took the site off the Superfund program�s National Priorities List (NPL) in 1999. Operation and maintenance activities are ongoing.
