Frequently asked questions

  • When do I declare honors?

Honors are declared at the end of your junior year by June 1st.  Declaring earlier is not an option because Honors is offered to students with a minimum GPA of 3.3 overall or 3.5 in the department . You must have taken enough classes that we can reliably predict your GPA. When declaring honors, you must choose a faculty adviser as the “primary reader” and another faculty member as a “secondary reader.”

  • When should I declare my major/minor?

As early as possible! Declaring early ensures that the requirements don't change without your knowledge.  It also makes you part of the undergrad community of the DLCL, so you will receive information about opportunities and events.

  • If the requirements for a major change, which ones apply to me?

The requirements for your degree that are relevant to you are determined by your declared date.  Your declared date is listed on your unofficial transcript.

  • Can I double-major in a DLCL department and another department?

Certainly, in fact many of our majors are double-majors. Please read this general information.

  • What classes can count for my major?

Classes in your department, as well as other relevant classes in the DLCL and other departments may count as electives towards your major, as long as they are taken for a letter grade and you aren’t counting them towards another degree.  Always obtain approval from your Chair of Undergraduate Studies.

  • Do I choose an advisor for my major/minor?

No. All undergraduates in DLCL departments are advised by the Chair of Undergraduate Studies in their department. The Chair may change more or less frequently depending on the department. If you choose to pursue honors, however, you will work closely with your adviser which can be any professor in your department.

  • How many units are required for the major?

That depends entirely on the major, please check the individual requirements.

  • Can I get transfer credit for classes taken at other universities?

Transferring credit is handled by the University Registrar, please see this site[http://studentaffairs.stanford.edu/registrar/students/ap]. If approved by the Registrar, the Chair of Undergraduate Studies decides whether your transfer credit can apply to your major.

  • Will classes taken abroad count?

Always get approval before you go abroad! Many classes taken at Bing Overseas campuses may count, and classes from other universities abroad may also be approved to count for your major please see transfer credit for details.

  • Are there required core classes for the majors?

Yes. Please check the requirements for the individual degrees. Whether core classes can be substituted is at the discretion of your Chair of Undergraduate Studies.

  • Can I change my plan of study later?

You can change your major, although please discuss this with the Chair of Undergraduate Studies of both the new and old departments.

  • How do I declare the major or minor?

Before you declare your major, you must develop a plan of study with the Chair of Undergraduate Studies. A minor can simply be declared on Axess as long as you have a major, you need to list all of the classes that you will count towards the minor in axess. We advise you to consult with the Chair of Undergraduate Studies, as well.

  • Can a credit/no-credit class count towards the major?

No, all classes must be taken for a letter grade.

  • Can IHUM, Thinking Matters, or SLE classes count for my major?

Yes, classes that fulfill general education requirements may count towards your major, but must not be counted towards another degree and be approved by the Chair of Undergraduate Studies.
