Join Alyssa Hislop and Jonathan Manton in the Archive of Recorded Sound for a tour of the Player Piano Project. In addition to providing an overview of the project and the technology of piano rolls and player pianos, Alyssa and Jonathan will show guests some of the amazing discoveries made during the recent cataloging work of the Welte Mignon rolls from the Denis Condon Collection, which has been ongoing since the beginning of the year and has recently been completed.

They will also play a number of Welte “red” rolls from the collection on a 1922 Steinway upright player piano housed in the Archive. These “red” rolls represent the very earliest rolls featured in the collection, recorded or published between 1905-1920. Come and listen to the likes of Debussy, Carreno, and Scriabin performing “live”.

More information on the Player Piano Project, including videos of rolls in action, can be found on the project’s website.

Tours are limited to 15 participants each and will take place on:

  • Wednesday, December 2nd, from 2:00-3:00PM, and
  • Thursday, December 3rd, from 10:00-11:00AM.
