The Week
The Graduate Student Council (GSC) Diversity Advocacy Committee (DAC) is proud to present Graduate Student Diversity Week, April 20-24. Join us for a series of five exciting events to share personal stories, explore identities, start conversations, and develop skills to promote and respect diversity. Historically, Diversity Week was the flagship event of the DAC. We are reviving this tradition this year, and bringing together graduate students from across the Stanford campus to discover, discuss and debate topics of interest surrounding diversity issues and concepts. Our events include panel discussions, experiential hands-on workshops, and free-form discussions. We hope you will join us in these wonderful events. We appreciate RSVPs (links below) to help with planning. To be connected with the DAC without becoming active members, please join our “friends of the DAC” mailing list!

Join us for a panel discussion about these challenges, and hear from other students about their experiences. Panelists are: Professor Hazel Markus, Davis-Brack Professor in the Behavioral Sciences; Professor Juan Santiago, Professor of Mechanical Engineering; Professor Paula Welander, Assistant Professor of Earth System Science and Natassia Rodriguez, PhD Student in Sociology.

We talk about diversity at Stanford all the time. Who hasn’t thought about diversity once or twice (or hundreds of times) a day…walking from class to class, building to building? Perhaps you are in support, skeptical, or critical. During Diversity Week, we are offering a platform and venue to discuss anonymous experiences that bring into question what we mean by diversity–institutionalized and non-institutionalized, and shed a new light into the prospects of our graduate community. In this event, we will discuss, contrast, expand or wonder about the confessions posted on Facebook and the GSC DAC Confessions website. You may contribute more experiences during the event. IMPORTANT: You do not need to contribute a confession to participate in this event.

Implicit Bias Workshop
Interactive Workshop | Please RSVP here!
Friday, April 24 | 9:15-10:15am (breakfast at 9am)

Have you ever noticed that you might have some relatively unconscious biases or prejudiced judgement towards social groups and behaviors? Discover your biases through an implicit bias test followed by a constructive discussion! Our discussion features Stanford Graduate Diversity Recruitment Officer Joseph Brown, who has experience conducting and discussing implicit bias test and the results. Dr. Ashwini Lal from CAPS will also help participants through this great learning process. Please RSVP and bring your own laptop to the event to take the test. |
