Loan periods

Green Library loan periods vary based on patrons' library privileges and what materials they are borrowing. Loan periods are described in detail under Borrow, renew, return.

Renew

What can be renewed?

Patrons can renew Green Library books at Green Library, as well as materials from most other campus libraries. The Hoover Library and Lane Medical Library ask that patrons contact them directly to renew their materials.

Patrons may renew items with loan periods longer than three days. Faculty are an exception: they may renew materials with shorter loan periods. Course reserve items from other libraries cannot be renewed at Green Library.

Renew by email

Email the Green Circulation Desk. Please forward your email notice or send a list of barcodes to renew. Include your Stanford or library card ID number. Staff will email you a receipt or explain why they can’t renew your books.

Renew by phone

Call the Green Circulation Desk at (650) 723-1493. Have your Stanford or library ID card ready; you must verify your card number. Staff will renew your items, if possible, or explain why they can’t be renewed.

Returning materials

Overnight returns

After we close, return items in the outside book return bins overnight. Items are discharged the next day and backdated to the last time the bin was emptied. However, email overdue notices are sent overnight. If you receive one – please be patient. We will discharge your books shortly after we open.

Short term items (course reserves, media reserves, and Media & Microtext materials) should be returned only in the Media & Reserves overnight return bin.

Book returns

Return books to the inside book return bins (by the Circulation Desk or Bing Wing entrance desk). Otherwise, use the external book return bins:

  • Main entrance bin – near the red fountain
  • Media & Reserves overnight bin – by the main entrance
  • Bing Wing fountain bin – by the Centennial Fountain
  • Loading dock bin – behind the library; between Green and the Hoover Institution

Return course reserves, media reserves, and Media & Microtext materials to the desk where you borrowed them. After those desks close, you may return items in the Media & Reserves overnight return bin.

Other library returns

Return Green items to any library or book return bin on campus. Green also accepts books from other libraries. However, to expedite returns we recommend that you bring items back to the library from which you borrowed them.

Non-circulating books

Some materials are for reference use only. They can’t be borrowed. Many are kept in the Information Center or the library’s reading rooms (Jonsson Social Sciences Reading Room, Bender Room, and Lane Room.)

However, some reference books are shelved in the stacks. Many are marked as reference inside the back cover, but some are not. Please ask Circulation staff to determine if you can borrow the book or not.

You may photocopy or scan reference books, pursuant to fair use copyright.
