Instant recap: No. 10 Stanford improves to 6-1 with convincing win over Washington

It wasn’t quite the offensive explosion that Stanford fans have become used to, but it was certainly more than enough to get the job done.

No. 10 Stanford (6-1, 5-0 Pac-12) cruised to a 31-14 win over Washington (3-4, 1-3), extending its winning streak to a conference-leading six games. Christian McCaffrey tallied 300 all-purpose yards to go with 2 touchdowns, while Kevin Hogan passed for 290 yards and 2 more touchdowns.

While the Stanford offense was solid, perhaps the biggest story of the night was the dominance of the Stanford defense, especially in the first half. The Cardinal were relentless against backup quarterback KJ Carta-Samuels, who got the start in place of the injured Jake Browning. Stanford held the Huskies offense to just 58 total yards in the first half, and Washington went 0-for-5 on 3rd-down conversions.

As a whole, the Cardinal were in control for the entire game, playing virtually the entire 60 minutes with a lead for 57 of the game’s 60 minutes and winning the time of possession battle 40:05 to 19:55.

Stanford will now head on the road, going up north to Pullman to take on Washington State next Saturday.

“STANFORD, Calif. (AP) Christian McCaffrey limped down the stairs following his postgame interviews with ice bags around both knees and his left hand. That was about the only time he was slowed down all night.”

Will “C-Mac” last until the Notre Dame game? Maybe its time–within the schedule–to have Barry J. and Bryce Love do some of the heavy lifting. Christian is only a soph…how’s he going to look on postgame crutches as a junior, or in a wheelchair as a senior…if he lasts that long. Whirlpool time is part of football mythology. Running backs have a career odometer; C-Mac is still a teenager. He’ll need to upgrade his weight room regimen just to handle the amount of ice packs for postgame interviews when he’s 21 (senior season).

C-Mac is being compared to Glyn Milburn, an NFL All-Pro who overlapped with Ed McCaffrey–C-Mac’s father–at Stanford. Neither Glyn nor Ed played against the bigger, faster, stronger college competition in modern D-1 football. Wear and tear is being managed better by modern training techniques, sports medicine advances–and advanced surgical techniques…which doesn’t change the increased wear and tear that’s absorbed by modern players–at the amateur levels.

Fortunately, C-Mac will have Cameron Scarlett (redshirting clone of Tyler Gaffney) to share the battering after this season. Together with Bryce Love, Cam should take much of the burden from C-Mac. This season, those fans who tout him as a Heisman candidate might like to scrounge autographed ice bags from C-Mac while he’s still healthy.
