Samantha Gibbes

GIS Research Associate, Global Forest Watch

Bio

Sam is a GIS Research Associate for the Global Forest Watch project. She helps the Global Forest Watch team to manipulate large raster data sets using cloud computing, analyze spatial data, and prepare maps for both online and print publications.

Previously, Sam worked as a GIS Analyst and task manager at MDA Information Systems LLC. The projects consisted of imagery analysis to detect land cover change and changes in the shoreline across the globe. In addition, she spent time using GIS to understand groundwater flow in deep fracture zones using geophysics and Lidar. During graduate school, Sam conducted research and analysis involving spatial statistics and contagion effects.

Sam holds a M.S. in Environmental Informatics from the University of Michigan, and a B.S. in Geography from Salisbury University, MD.

She lives in Old Town, Alexandria and enjoys riding her bike on the Mt. Vernon trail, participating in art class, jogging and attending coding related MeetupGroups in DC.
