The Doctor of Philosophy degree is recommended for engineers who expect to devote their career to advanced research, teaching or technical work focusing on the planning, design and analysis of civil or environmental engineering systems.
The PhD program is rigorous and should be undertaken only by students with the ability for independent work. It typically requires a minimum of three years of full-time graduate study beyond the master's degree. Students who lack adequate background in their area of specialization (for instance, without a prior degree in civil engineering, if required in their program) or who are not full-time students should expect to spend additional time to complete the degree. PhD candidates should develop individually tailored expected-progress timetables in consultation with their program advisors. Find more information about eligibility and requirements.
