Professor Roland Horne receives Geothermal Special Achievement Awardfor his unparalleled contributions to geothermal education and development worldwide, through the Stanford Workshops, World Geothermal Congress, and his leadership and commitment to the International geothermal Association (IGA) and GRC. Congratulations, Roland!
Sumeet Trehan has been selected as a Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Star Fellow. The Star Fellowship is awarded to eight students across North America pursuing degrees related to the oil and gas industry.
Stanford scientist's investigations show that drinking water sources may be threatened by thousands of shallow oil and gas wells mined with the controversial process of hydraulic fracturing. A new study suggests safeguards.
Congratulations to Kevin Arrigo, Marshall Burke, David Lobell, Rosemary Knight, and Roz Naylor, who have been awarded seed grants from the Stanford Woods Institute's Environmental Venture Projects.
Tony Kovscek has been appointed to the Keleen and Carlton Beal Professorship. This honor is much deserved--previous holders of the Beal Professorship are Lynn Orr and Hank Ramey.
Congratulations to Joanna Sun who earned the 2015 Dean’s Award for Distinguished and Exemplary Service. The Dean’s Award for Distinguished and Exemplary Service recognizes outstanding contributions by individuals or teams to the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences during the past year that have gone “above and beyond” their regular assignments.
Awards are given out each year to ERE Students in three categories. The Henry J. Ramey, Jr. Fellowship Award recognizes the most prominent research student in the department. Frank G. Miller Fellowship Award recognizes the top student each quarter in course performance. It is awarded three times each year to a student selected on grade performance and research productivity from the preceding quarter. The William H. Brigham Memorial Award recognizes a student, or a staff member, who contributes their time generously to improve the lives of others. It is an award for department citizenship.
Rob Jackson says the integrity of wells is the key to safeguarding water quality, and that reports of fracking chemicals found in drinking water is usually due to poor cementing or other problems with well casings.
Hamza Aljamaan(first place, PhD Division),Larry Jin (second place, Master's Division), and Yasmin Bashirova(second place, B.S. Division) are student paper contest winners at the Society of Petroleum Engineers’ Western North America Region Student Paper Contest.

Stanford's Miles Traer talks with Roland Horne, the Thomas Davies Barrow Professor in the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences, and alumna and geothermal reservoir engineer Sarah Pistone about the innovative technologies that allow us to harness the heat from deep within the Earth and convert it to clean energy.
Prof. Adam Brandt is co-author of the Global Oil-Climate Index that allows comparison of climate impacts associated with a broad range of oil resources such as heavy oils, oil sands and tight oil. Brandt collaborated with colleagues from the Carnegie Endowment's Energy and Climate Program and the University of Calgary to develop the first-of-its-kind index.
