Can I deposit content for which I do not hold copyright?
Yes, provided you have permission from the copyright holder to do so. The SDR Terms of Deposit addresses third party content. Be sure to review these terms (PDF) to ensure you can agree to them as required before depositing in the SDR.
What are the license options that SDR offers?
The SDR online deposit system offers Creative Commons licenses, a matrix of six options, from liberal to conservative, for any kind of content. The SDR also offers Open Data Commons licenses, a narrower range of options for open data and databases.
We generally recommend the Attribution Non-Commercial CC license (CC BY-NC) or, for data, the ODC Attribution (ODC-BY), because each encourages open access and collaboration in the scholarly process.
To apply a public domain license to data, we offer ODC Public Domain Dedication and License.
To apply a software license, or any other license, ask the SDR team.
Can I apply a license at the file level?
No, the system currently facilitates licensing at the item level only. To indicate a file-level license within a deposited item, we offer two possible work-arounds: a depositor can add an annotation about a file-specific license in the file label and/or embed license information in the file itself.
Can I restrict access to content deposited in the SDR?
Yes, you can restrict access to a Stanford-only audience. Generally speaking, the SDR is not a "dark archive" for private content; the intention is to promote sharing of deposited content for scholarly use.
Can I deposit data containing sensitive information, such as patient records, student records, or financial information?
High Risk Data, as defined in the Stanford Information Security Office's Risk Classifications, must be anonymized, masked or cleansed before deposit in SDR. Data classified as Low Risk or Moderate Risk can be deposited in SDR.
Is there a “take down” policy?
Requests to take down, and effectively remove online access to, content in the SDR are considered by the University Librarian’s office. You can submit a request by email. See also the University's page on copyright complaints.
