Breaking Bad's RJ Mitte on acting, disability and 'inspiration porn'
http://bit.ly/MitteCP

When it comes to acting, RJ Mitte refuses to highlight disability, avoiding roles that could be seen as ‘inspiration porn’, a term coined by Stella Young. On world cerebral palsy day, he spoke with writer and activist, Georgia Cranko, who also has the condition. They talk diversity in life and, more recently, on screen since, Mitte says, the acting industry realised ‘people want to see real people on television’.

What the hell is a 'strong female character' anyway? Chanya Button | Comment is Free ► http://bit.ly/StrongWomenCiF

The need for more ‘strong women’ in film is currently one of the industry’s biggest talking points. In fact, the 2015 BFI London Film Festival has announced that this is its ‘Year of the Strong Woman’. But, argues film-maker Chanya Button, this phrase lacks nuance and makes it difficult to create characters that reflect the women we see around us.

Backstage at the Met Opera's costume shop: frenzy, fabric and velvet codpieceshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gKL60SPWf4

For Elissa Iberti, every piece of lace trim, button and sash is important. Iberti is the head of the Metropolitan Opera’s costume shop, where she oversees the production of nearly 800 outfits for five productions opening this fall. No detail is too small for the costumes adorning some of the world’s biggest opera stars.

Ahmed would be in school right now if he weren’t suspended. With TV trucks filling the street outside, he's in a curtained room of the family home when we talk to him, but has only slept a total of about eight hours in the last few days. At his last school he was the Inventor Kid. So he invented something, was arrested wearing a +NASA shirt and set in motion forces the 14yo is now struggling to comprehend.

"It’s worth it, once you realize what you’re fighting for," he tells +The Guardian. And he looks forward to meeting +Barack Obama at +The White House, but can't show him his clock – yet. "The police still have it," he says.

#IStandWithAhmed
This week, the teenage inventor gained global attention after being arrested for bringing a clock he made to his high school in Irving, Texas

The Hawaiian dome where Nasa prepares humanity for life on Mars | Guardian Docshttp://bit.ly/MarsOnEarthDoc

Water has been found on Mars – but if the red planet can support life, what will it be like for any humans who go there? Six future crew members of a possible Nasa mission spend up to 12 months in confinement in a Mars-like landscape in Mauna Kea, Hawaii, to work out how humans would react to long-duration space travel.

Conservative party conference: Can anything stop the Tories? | Anywhere but Westminster  ► http://bit.ly/ABWTories

At the Tories’ first gathering as the sole party of government for nearly 20 years, a wearied John Harris finds them brimming with the confidence of power. Outside the party conference venue in Manchester, irate marchers protest about the awfulness of Conservative rule while Cameron, Osborne, Boris and the rest carry on regardless. But could they eventually be felled by the Tories’ hidden weakness – the fact that while Corbynmania surges on, the Conservative party is ageing and shrinking fast?

Robot swarms: will they bomb us or save us?http://bit.ly/SwarmBots

Swarms have existed for millions of years in nature and now they’re evolving into silicon. Labs across the US are developing robotic swarms of flying copters and tiny bots that can coordinate on their own. With robot swarms already in development for the US military, these bands of robots will only continue to grow.

Taking drugs can be fun, and the law should reflect that - Paris Lees | Comment is Freehttp://bit.ly/DrugsParisLees

Paris Lees has taken lots of drugs. And most of the time, her experiences haven’t matched up to government scaremongering.
Subscribe to The Guardian ► http://is.gd/subscribeguardian
She argues that we won’t have a sensible conversation about drugs until we admit that lots of people do them without dire consequences.
