HHMI’s science education program previously held competitions separately for universities and colleges. Since 1989, HHMI has awarded four- or five-year grants to research universities to support science education at the undergraduate, K-12, and community college levels.
The 2014 competition specifically challenged universities to develop and implement strategies that would significantly increase the persistence in science of undergraduate students from all backgrounds. Institutions that were invited to the most recent competition were classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as “very high” and “high” research activity and offered baccalaureate degrees in the natural sciences.
HHMI announces a new competition aimed at encouraging colleges and universities to build lasting institutional capacity to provide excellent science education opportunities for all students, especially those students who come to college through non-traditional pathways such as transfer and first-generation students.
