It's not conservatism. Why do you think neoliberals haven't done a thing about this? It's the top 10% (in other words all CEOs and politicians, since we have a money run political system) against all of us.

Brexit may well dent consumer confidence by way of falling markets, lower investment and less hiring.

Going back to 1952, consumer confidence has been a fair guide to presidential election outcomes.

Scientists expect El Niño to die out over the next few months, but it will have lasting consequences in the form of higher commodity prices.

#elnino   #climatechange   #droughts   #wildfire   #environment   #tourism   #commodities   #prices
A wildfire rages, displacing tens of thousands. Droughts ravage crops, leaving tens of millions hungry. An African nation sells off some of its famous wildlife. Bleaching harms stretches of the Great Barrier Reef. What's happening? El Niño.

Grit is passion and perseverance for long-term goals — essentially, the opposite of quitting. But is quitting ever a good thing? Psychologist Angela Duckworth, author of “Grit,” explores the question.

"A victory it was — for those who reject the political and economic policies of recent years." — Economics correspondent Paul Solman reporting from Oxford

#economics #Brexit #britain #UK #eureferendum #EuropeanUnion #Europe #markets #pound
First, of course, are the political implications. Second, these are millions upon millions of people who were voting against their pocketbooks. The third shock is more personal: my apparent over-reliance on the prediction markets, and on economists like Justin Wolfers who do as well.

Europe's bleak economic performance was not dictated by the gods. It was the result of the conscious decision by the EU leadership to turn towards austerity in 2010, writes economist Dean Baker.

#economy   #Europe   #europeanunion   #Brexit   #unitedkingdom   #austerity   #greatbritain
Having been rejected by UK voters, the EU leadership is now intent on making them suffer. That’s not the sort of attitude that should determine economic policy, writes economist Dean Baker.

Or you could take "I started to be sexually harassed by a female co-worker." at face value.

"more power to her, being annoying and vexing isn't a crime." hmm.... But probably an actionable ethical breach at a company that had a real sexual harassment policy.

Justice is often thwarted by layers of bureaucracy, reluctance of people to confess their mistakes and problems in communicating your problem to the right people.
