Deborah Freeland, who holds a J.D. and a Ph.D. in Biophysics from Stanford, was a CISAC Science Fellow in 1998-1999 and is now an affiliate. She is currently a Research Fellow of the Stanford Center on the Legal Profession and an Associate Professor of Law at the University of San Francisco.
Freeland has held fellowships from the National Science Foundation, the American Association of University Women, Soroptimist International, Vassar College, and the Stanford Center on Conflict and Negotiation. She was also a Visiting Scholar at FSI’s Center for Environmental Science and Policy, which is now known as the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment.
Freeland’s research in law and policy has both theoretical and empirical dimensions, engages a variety of substantive topics from the perspective of professional identity and ethics, and appears in prominent law reviews.
She has published theoretical and empirical research in molecular biology, biochemistry, polymer physics and materials science in leading scientific journals.
Freeland earned a J.D. from Stanford Law School, a Ph.D. from the Interdisciplinary Program in Biophysics at Stanford University, and a B.A. in Biochemistry and Cognitive Science from Vassar College.
