Undergraduate Overview

The Economics Major provides a rigorous toolkit for thinking about the economy and about economic policy.

The mission of the undergraduate program in Economics is to acquaint students with the economic aspects of modern society, to familiarize them with techniques for the analysis of contemporary economic problems, and to develop in them an ability to exercise judgment in evaluating public policy. Why major in Economics? Watch "A career in Economics...it's much more than you think." produced by the American Economic Association.

The program introduces students to macro- and microeconomic theory, teaches them to think and write clearly about economic problems and policy issues and to apply the basic tools of economic analysis. The undergraduate major provides an excellent background for those who plan careers in government and private enterprise as well as those pursuing graduate degrees in professional schools or in the field of economics.

The minor in Economics has two main goals. The first is to acquaint students with the rudiments of micro- and macroeconomic theory that are required of all majors. The second is to allow students to build basic competence in the application of this theory to two fields of economics of their choosing.

The Econ Honors Program offers an outstanding opportunity for independent research, creativity, and achievement.  Students who complete the honors program graduate with Bachelor of Arts in Economics with Honors.

The Introductory Economics Center provides resources and support for all faculty, teaching assistants, and students involved with Econ 1.

The Econ Peer Advisors meet with students in the Landau Economics building. They can answer questions students have about the major, coursework, internships, studying abroad, and the variety of other opportunites available at Stanford. Winter 2016 Peer Advising Schedule

Each summer the Department of Economics employs undergraduates as Research Assistants (RAs) for faculty on the Stanford campus during a ten-week period.  Participants are rising juniors and seniors, and most go on to write an honors thesis.

The Stanford Economics Association (SEA) is a student-run group of Economics majors and other students interested in economics.
