An Evening with Anna Deavere Smith, Adam Mansbach, Rubén Martinez,
and Elaine Kim.
#OccupyArt: Immigration, Nation, and the Art of Occupation
This course consists of dialogues, panels and performances that
explore the complex, contested, and shifting ideas associated with the
word “Occupation,” from Occupy Wall Street to “occupied territories.” The class
will engage critically with the theme of Occupation across contexts, exploring
both the potential and limitations of the “Art of Occupation.” Covering both local
and transnational perspectives (Arizona, Mexico, Palestine, Oakland, New York,
Los Angeles, and Stanford University, among others), students will explore
how artists have responded to Occupation and how they have taken spaces—
occupied them—in order to transform them.
In addition to a roster of IDA & CCSRE-affiliated faculty, students will
have the opportunity to engage with some of the most compelling artists and
writers of our time, including Anna Deavere Smith, Angela Davis, Boots Riley,
Ruben Martinez, Adam Mansbach, Mark Gonzales, Dignidad Rebelde, and many
more. Students will be encouraged to consider the role of the arts in economic,
immigrant, political and social justice struggles.
The course is open to Stanford students and the Bay Area community at
large, a national locus for the current ferment around the Occupy movement.
