The rapid expansion of oil crops throughout the tropics presents new challenges for protecting ecosystems and promoting smallholder farmer livelihoods. This research area asks: 

• Where are oil crops expanding, and who is making land use decisions?
• What are the changing market dynamics of oil crops as food, fuel and consumer products?
• How are smallholder farmers and natural ecosystems affected by the growth in oil crop production?
