Belinda Byrne

Belinda Byrne joined FSI in 2005 and now serves as the Institute's executive director. She oversees FSI's central administration office and is in charge of finance and administration, faculty affairs and institutional planning and development. She works closely with the Institute's faculty and staff leadership across its seven constituent research centers to develop policies, practices and programs that advance the Institute's mission of excellence and innovation in applied multidisciplinary research and education on important international issues of our time.

Before joining FSI, she served as associate director of the Beckman Center for Molecular and Genetic Medicine at the Stanford School of Medicine. Working with faculty director Professor Lucy Shapiro, she developed the Beckman Center's research and fellowship program in translational research, launched a speakers series on bench-to-bedside projects, managed the annual Beckman symposium, and was the business manager of four School of Medicine shared facilities that provided advanced scientific services in molecular and genetic medicine for Stanford bioscientists.

Her career in academic program development began with her role as an educational specialist at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, where she managed a publishing project in partnership with Lippincott Williams & Wilkins to produce a comprehensive set of continuing medical education (CME) materials on radiology in print and digital formats. She developed the Department of Radiology's first website and an online teaching file. She continued her work as an educational technologist when she moved to Stanford in 2000, managing more than 20 web-based projects across the campus.

She has bachelor's degree in English literature from the University of California, Berkeley, and a master's degree in education from San Francisco State University, with a concentration on learning technologies.
