REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – Stanford, the defending Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Champions, earned a sweep of its six races in the season-opening Pac-12 Challenge Regatta on the course at Redwood Shores this weekend.
The Cardinal opened the regatta on Saturday against UC Santa Barbara during a packed morning session of rowing. Stanford took both races against the Gauchos by open water. The varsity eight raced down the 2,000-meter course in 6:40.8, nearly 20 seconds ahead of UCSB. In the second varsity eight, the Cardinal (6:57.21) won by more than 25 seconds over UCSB (7:24.65).
In Saturday's afternoon session, Stanford went up against Western Washington. The Cardinal varsity eight (7:10.2) earned its second win of the day, capturing the open water triumph over WWU (7:35.9). The second varsity eight lightweight race saw Stanford (7:31.3) take the win over Vikings (7:38.3) to complete the sweep.
On Sunday, the Cardinal continued its dominant performance, recording open water victories over UC San Diego in both the varsity eight and the second varsity eight.
Stanford will back in action next Saturday and Sunday (April 2-3) in the San Diego Crew Classic.
