STANFORD, Calif. – The Stanford sailing team added two more Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference titles this past weekend, winning the coed and team Racing Championships at the San Diego Yacht Club in San Diego, California.
In the coed championship, the Cardinal won the A-division and the B-division, finishing with 78 total points, comfortably ahead of UC Santa Barbara (104), Hawaii (132) and USC (139). Stanford has won the PCCSC Coed Championships in each of the past eight seasons.
Sophomore Will La Dow and senior Axel Sly skippered Stanford's A-boat, with junior Nikki Obel and sophomore Kennedy Placek serving as crews. In 16 races, the group won eight, finishing outside of the top two just four times.
In the B-division, senior Antoine Screve and junior Reinier Eenkema van Dijk skippered the Cardinal to eight more wins out of 16, while senior Sammy Steele and freshman Cassie Obel served as crews.
The Cardinal won the PCCSC Team Racing Championship with a perfect 5-0 record on Sunday, spearheaded by skippers Sly, Screve and La Dow. Placek, Steele and Nikki Obel served as crews, as Stanford won its ninth-consecutive PCCSC Team Racing trophy.
The Cardinal was also in action in Kings Point, New York, at the Admirals Cup, finishing eighth in the three-division field.
In the A-division, freshman skipper Martina Sly and senior crew Yuki Yoshiyasu finished eighth, while the freshman tandem of skipper William Marshall and Kathryn Booker finished sixth in the B-field. Sophomore Haley Fox added a 13th-place finish in the singlehanded C-division.
With the weekend's results, Stanford has now qualified for nationals in all three disciplines -- coed, team racing and women's. The National Championships, held this season in San Diego, will begin May 24 with the women's semifinals. The regatta will wrap up with the coed finals on June 3.
