Research Experiences Especially for Freshmen (REEF) Summer Program at Hopkins Marine Station

Undergraduate Researchers in the intertidalHopkins Marine Station offers paid research internships to current Stanford freshmen that want to spend the summer after their first year participating in ongoing faculty research projects to learn about marine science research methods.

See the details of the research projects that faculty currently have open to students. All research opportunities are off-campus at Hopkins Marine Station in Pacific Grove (~1.5 hours from campus), and one project also takes students to the field in American Samoa.

Students will get the opportunity to work directly with faculty, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and research staff. Laboratory research often involves long hours at the bench and a great attention to detail. The hours can be irregular and the results may be few and far between. Learn the details of each project, talk to the research sponsors, and decide if it is right for you.

Stanford-system housing is available for students and is a 10-minute walk or 2-minute bike ride from the marine station, a grocery store, restaurants, and Cannery Row attractions.
