Special Alert Regarding 2014 Tax Returns for Non-U.S. Resident Students
Bechtel International Center is aware of cases of international students receiving written notices from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) denying tax return refunds and/or requesting an additional payment of tax. The notice is stating that the 1042-S information on your reported 2014 income tax return does not match what the University reported to the IRS. Our understanding from colleagues at other colleges and universities is that this is a nationwide issue, one which is being escalated for resolution with the IRS in every way possible. Nonetheless, if you have received such a notice from the IRS, we recommend that you respond to the notice as follows:
If you have received such a notice, please submit a HelpSU to Stanford’s Payroll Office (https://helpsu.stanford.edu/helpsu/3.0/helpsu-form?pcat=Payroll) to request a supporting letter verifying that the withholding reported on your original 1042-S is correct.
If you used Glacier Tax Prep (GTP) software to prepare your taxes, you should follow up with GTP Support Center at support@glaciertax.com to obtain a template that may be used to respond to the IRS. Contact information for the IRS is also included in the notice.
Thank you for your patience while the University works to resolve this nationwide issue pending guidance from the IRS. If you have not received a notice from the IRS as described above, no additional action is required of you at this time.
