The Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies (IUP), located on the Tsinghua University campus, is specifically designed to deliver advanced competency through highly intensive and specialized language skills training.

Leading the way for more than 55 years, IUP is the choice of more Blakemore-Freeman, Schwarzman, Yale Light and Yenching scholars annually. It is also the only program that is supported by a consortium of 11 elite North American universities with leading China studies programs.

More About IUP

INTENSELY RIGOROUS

At IUP, intensity ensures Chinese language proficiency. Students can expect 4-6 hours of class preparation and 4 hours of classes per day. An instructor with a maximum of 3 students will engage and challenge each other in closed-book classroom sessions. Daily 1-on-1 tutorials also enable students to ask questions regarding the course material and to work on areas of improvement, which may include delving into studies specific to their core interests.

VIEW PROGRAMS

Beyond a study abroad program, IUP graduates gain confidence and competence in their specific field of study.

HIGHLY INDIVIDUALIZED

IUP provides the highest level of focused instruction. Once students meet the IUP criteria for advanced language skills, they’ll have their choice of courses based on their academic interest, dissertation topic or areas related to their career.

Working closely with their instructor, advanced students will be able to customize their curriculum. Plus, with multiple program term options, students are welcome to come back to IUP to build upon their knowledge and gain even greater proficiency.

Graduates become a member of an influential network of 2,500+ IUP alumni and connect with leaders in diverse fields from business and education to government, law, sports broadcasting and even stand-up comedy.
