PRM1 and KAR5 function in cell-cell fusion and karyogamy to drive distinct bisexual and unisexual cycles in the Cryptococcus pathogenic species complex

Ci Fu and Joseph Heitman identify and characterize two genes in the Cryptococcus species complex, PRM1 and KAR5, which play conserved roles in plasma membrane fusion and karyogamy in fungi. They show that unisexual reproduction is largely independent from cell-cell fusion and mechanistically different from bisexual reproduction.

Rv0004 is a new essential member of the mycobacterial DNA replication machinery

Most of the initial studies on bacterial DNA replication were performed in Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis, and more distantly related bacteria have diverged from these organisms in even the most fundamental processes. Katherine M. Mann and colleagues discover that a previously uncharacterized protein in Mycobacteria, named Rv0004, is essential for bacterial viability and involved in DNA replication.

Post-guidance signaling by extracellular matrix-associated Slit/Slit-N maintains fasciculation and position of axon tracts in the nerve cord

Krishna Moorthi Bhat shows that Slit/Slit-N interact with Robo in tracts to maintain the fasciculation and position of axon tracts following axon guidance. In the absence of Slit in mature tracts after their guidance, the tracts de-fasciculate and merge with one another and shift their position towards the midline.

Christopher H. Chandler, Sudarshan Chari and colleagues examined how the genomic and environmental context influence the expression of multiple mutations in two related genes affecting the fruit fly wing. They found that context can have a big impact on the interpretation of genetic experiments.
