Science Teaching and Learning Center

Project Description

The Science Teaching and Learning Center will be created by renovating the historic Old Chemistry building. It will house teaching laboratories and support spaces available to both students and faculty. It will combine the science libraries and will integrate the classrooms and lecture halls with new collaborative study spaces with the objective of creating a facility that will bring a sense of community for undergraduate students primarily in the Biology and Chemistry Departments.

The Science Teaching and Learning Center will be a key component of a long range vision to create a Biology/Chemistry District along the formal entrance to the Stanford University Campus by the oval located at the end of Palm Drive. With this vision, the University will relocate the Chemistry Department’s teaching laboratories located within the Mudd Chemistry building, the Chemistry Library located within the Organic Chemistry building, the Biology Department’s teaching labs and branch library housed primarily within Herrin Hall, the Math Library located in Building 380 within the Main Quad, and Classroom and Lecture Hall spaces located within these existing buildings. The overarching goal of the University’s vision is to rehabilitate and re-commission this historic building, to promote overall campus integration and integration within the Stanford science programs and to strengthen the science community while providing the faculty and students with a collaborative working, learning and teaching environment.
