Emotion in psychology, art, acting used to aid autistics

Stanford researcher David Wilkins is studying how people can be trained to better recognize facial emotions. He is comparing drawing techniques used by portrait artists, facial mimicry and emotional memory techniques used by actors and microexpression and subtle expression recognition techniques developed by psychologists.

Thanks to a $100,000 prize he's receiving as the first recipient of the George Rosenkranz Award, Eran Bendavid, a Stanford Medical School instructor, will spend the next two years figuring out whether the money going to HIV and malaria programs in sub-Saharan Africa has improved the overall health of children and their mothers.

Medical students fixed up with residency programs

Matt Mori (in red) was an opera singer before entering medical school. On Match Day last week, as about 90 Stanford students who "matched" gathered for a ceremony, Mori celebrated his selection for a residency at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary, a Harvard University affiliate. He hopes to treat performing artists one day.
