Sue Schmitt, who has worked for Stanford since 1995, has been promoted to the position of university controller following a national search.

In this role, Schmitt is responsible for leading and managing the financial and management accounting activities of the university.

"Sue brings significant understanding of the university to the job as well as impeccable professional credentials," Susan Calandra, senior associate vice president for finance, said in an announcement. "We held a nationwide search for the position and had a number of qualified candidates who went through a rigorous search process.  In the end, Schmitt was unanimously selected as the best choice."

Schmitt began her career at Stanford in 1995, as general accounting manager.  She was promoted to associate controller a year later and has supervised most of the functions in the Controller’s Office, including investment accounting, cash management, capital accounting and fund accounting.  She has been in the acting controller role since last August, and was instrumental in leading her team through a successful year-end close, Calandra said.

Before coming to Stanford, Schmitt worked in Apple’s internal audit department, was CFO of a mortgage bank and worked for Deloitte Haskins & Sells.  She holds a bachelor's degree from Cornell University and an MBA from the University of Chicago.
